Where everyone is an athlete…

Check Out This Video: I’m Famous!

Here’s a nice little video of one of my #youngathletes #kickboxers at SKF Karate Cashman’s Crawley Dojo in #crawley #sussex

This was taken during her first session with me for her individual programme that will be developed based on her Functional Movement Screen #FMS results.

Cecee is a rising star having performed really well at many of her recent #WAKO competitions and she’s only just turned 10 years old!

She will have a programme that will improve her fundamental movement patterns whilst including some resistance training using bodyweight, dumbbells, medicine balls, suspension training and bands to improve her strength levels for her sport.

These exercises will be carefully selected based on her current strength levels and current ability whilst aiming to improve her movement and function as a human-being, an athlete before progressing into specialisation as a #kickboxer as she gets older.

It is imperative that my programme is based on holistic movement theory rather than simply training her to kick and punch better. Early specialisation through simply training for one specific sport has been a huge issue of debate over the last few years. But, it is now commonly agreed that the training of #youngathletes should focus on developing their movement patterns and skills before building fitness on this function.

Check out the “Optimum Performance Pyramid” from Gray Cook’s 2003 book “Athletic Body in Balance below to see how I aim to train my athletes:

This diagram basically outlines optimum performance, movement efficiency and sport skills are balanced and adequate. By developing a balanced athlete, they will be less susceptible to injuries and will have a stronger foundation from which they can develop their performance. As previously mentioned, my aims with Cecee are to develop her functional movements (the base of the pyramid), whilst progressing to develop her strength levels (the middle of the pyramid).
